Go Goa Gone - Part 1

As some of you know, whenever I (or we) take a trip, it never ends with us just returning back with a solemn body language (and dreadful workdays following). It almost always comes to a stop with a blog post capturing some of the great moments from the days gone by...

With that tradition in mind and our first outing in India in more than a year, K and I and the cast of Gr8six embarked on a beautiful and remarkably short trip to Goa. Most of you don't know the gang of six - which has added a few new members (namely the wives and the kiddos) and has missed a few (they being out of the country). Introduction beckons...

KiMo (or as Mayank calls her - Dollar Bahu/DB) and Rajesh (Madrasi - again, coined by Mayank. I don't quite remember when he called me by my given name).
Mayank (let's call him Banker), Anjali (Bahubali/BB - strong reason behind the name) and Nanhi (Nayonika for the rest of the world).
Nishit (we call him Producer - eventually he is going to produce a movie), Priya (our own Vidya Balan/VB - due to the extraordinary resemblance to the star) and Avishka (the youngest one of the lot - and the star of the trip).
Samit (fondly known as the Mountain Goat, or lovably Sam) and Nandini (the newest entrant and nicknamed Aakhri Bahu/AB for obvious reasons).

Now that the cast is out of the way, the way this trip was cast is nothing short of history making. One fine day, Goat says, work sucks (or something like that), Banker says let's go somewhere and within a few hours Goa materialized. This was early July and the dates set for mid-August.

One would think with a trip planned this early, travelling and accommodations would be a breeze - NOT!! Heavily dependent on BB's contact - who understandably came through - 24 hours before the train departure and exorbitant flight prices (just for the return leg), travel was set. Now what do we do about the stay. Do we stay in a bungalow? (ideal but rejected outright by Producer),  Do we stay in a place where BB and Banker have stayed? (Lemontree, fair but rejected outright by BB) or Do we stay in a 5-star? (Doubletree Hilton, bingo, Producer has the last word). While it really created a hole in our pockets, the stay was extremely comfortable and excellent.

While the dates (15th-18th August) certainly were good, what added brownie points to these dates was that Producer and Goat had their birthdays smack in the middle (16th and 17th respectively).

With the 10 of us reaching Goa by the best (or worst) possible means - Train, Flight and Bus (sorry S and N), the vacation within the vacation was beginning to take shape. It just so worked out that K, R, M, A and Nans took the train out to Goa; Ni, P and Av took the early morning flight and; Sam-Nandu trudged out of Bangalore in an unpleasant monster of a road trip.

This is already a post without getting into the details of each day, so I am just going to split this into multiple posts....

Did we get drunk? Did we eat a lot? Did we fall sick? Did we laugh our hearts out? - All coming up....

Stay tuned....

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining...

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore...

Who let the dogs out?

You know how many humans have been diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and the condition manifests itself at intervals depending on the situation; a similar behavior is seen among man's best friends, especially the strays. First, a first for us (among many other firsts during this trip). As my father, Kirti and yours truly watched Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani last night and got off the theater at 1 AM (yessir - my father, Kirti and I is a trifecta one would normally not associate as the group going to a movie with a 10PM start), the logical idea was to look for an auto to take us home. As soon as I trudged off in the direction of Mulund station where autos are normally available, a small hitch! A few stray dogs, who normally would be well behaved during the day, figured now would be the best time to put on the Manjulika avatar and display their beastly best behavior. Wrong turn, Rajesh. And so we decided to walk the roughly 10-12 minutes. Brilliant decision, says Kirti,...
