Filmfare Awards

Watched the Filmfare Awards for 2009 last night. Was so disappointed that I wanted to let it out in this post. Past years' awards used to be long and never ending but the excitement and the performances were something the whole family used to look forward to. Javed Jaffrey used to be tremendously funny and confident as a host. Missed him doing his usual routine.

In the recent years, the performances were 'taped' prior to the awards at YRF studios and then shown 'live' to the audience. 2003's Kal Ho Na Ho set the trend for homosexual jokes between Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) and Saif Ali Khan (SAK) and that further spilled onto insulting the film industry folks with their sometimes witty and sometimes crass humor. SAK and SRK indeed put up a slightly watchable performance and their take on Shiv Sena was brief but funny.

Karan Johar, who seems to be everywhere, doesn't seem tired to host these shows but fails to give a good movie everytime. I don't understand after repeatedly failing to direct good movies, he is talked in the same breath as India's other great directors, and the list doesn't even include regional stalwarts.

Last night, I was shell shocked at 2 instances. Firstly, Best Dialogue was written as Best Dialouge which itself was unacceptable. No one bothers to proof read these things and unsurprisingly, the audience is left to see what is shown.

Secondly, the organizers wanted to pay a tribute to Michael Jackson. Fair enough. Karan Johar in his teleprompted script, announced the date of death as July 25, 2009 which for all its importance was so improperly done that it was unwatchable. MJ died on June 25, 2009.

On the performances, Deepika Padukone, who for starters cannot act to save her life, did such a yawningly boring dance sequence, that the organizers must have second thoughts about having her on stage in the coming years. She looked so disinterested that she herself must be wondering what the hell was she doing there.

Why did it seem that anyone who had a movie in 2009 walked away with an award. Ayan Mukherjee (Wake Up Sid) and Zoya Akhtar (Luck By Chance) should have done more to get the Best Debut Award. Thoroughly undeserved. The more these awards are given out, the more respect a certain Aamir Khan deserves for not putting up with this sham. Filmfare has absolutely lost its credibility.

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining

Writer's Block

It's been six months since I put pen to paper, rather, fingers to keyboard, to put up a blog post. Talk about a writer's block. Highlights of the hiatus include; - Rivika and Riaan turning 10. That they are unrecognizable now compared to their 1st or even 5th birthday shows Kirti and I how fast they have really grown. Fine little pre-teens they've become, with their varied interests in sports and dance leading to a hopefully and potentially fulfilling childhood and beyond. - A splendid trip to Cancun (Mexico) to ring in the kids' milestone birthday. - The hottest Christmas in recent memory (celebrated in Mexico, that is). A trip to the ruins of Chichen-Itza (these folks knew what they were doing, mighty impressive I say), a stroll through the city center of Valladolid (one might say the place bears a striking resemblance to Panjim (Goa)), a thrill-seeking dive through a Cenote, copious amounts of watered-down unlimited alcohol at an all-inclusive resort, which in itself
