The Extra Inch

Just wound up a relaxing and refreshing trip to Mumbai this past week. Met with family and friends and had a great time catching up with details of the last 6 months. The new house is very spacious and airy. This is the first time in 23 years we have lived above the ground floor, 4th to be precise. There isn't much scramble about swine flu in Mumbai although one of my closest friends is down with jaundice for completely unknown reasons.

The main "issue" for some of my family members (in-laws included) was the length of the mustache that I had grown. I had been growing a "handle-bar" moush for the past 1 month and it had grown to a fairly reasonable "length", I suppose. My father (and to some extent, my wife) have opposed any look that goes beyond a short hair cut and a clean shaven face. This time there was staunch resistance from my mom-in-law as well. My mother-in-law recommended that I cut-off the 'handle-bar' portion of it, but I was not going to have any of it. My mother doesn't care about these things. On the other hand, she is actually supportive of me in public. But this time, I was determined to keep the moush for the entire trip. My resistance in the face of this outrage did last only for 10 days and I eventually managed to get rid of it couple of days before I left for Bangalore. Saw a great deal of relief from my father and my mother-in-law. Became a "seedha-saadha bachcha" again.

I have promised folks back home that they can expect something "different" from me the next time they see me. My father is actually dreading that day, I am pretty sure.

Kept Ganpati at home for 5 full days. Had a very low-key celebration this time around. We performed an eco-friendly visarjan by immersing Lord Ganesha in a bucket at home. I think this was the first time we had actually performed the immersion. My mom was pretty disappointed about the whole "letting Ganesha go" thing. Captured the whole thing on camera.

Laptop is finally up for repairs and would only get it after couple of weeks. That means I am lonely again. Feels great to be blogging again though. The real test begins tomorrow when I resume "work" after a good break. Somethings gotta give.

Good to see you blogging again. Welcome back to Bangalore. I feel you look great on big mustache.....
Thank you Anonymous, but unless you have seen me in person, I don't think you know how I looked with the mustache.

Do I know you from before?

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining

Writer's Block

It's been six months since I put pen to paper, rather, fingers to keyboard, to put up a blog post. Talk about a writer's block. Highlights of the hiatus include; - Rivika and Riaan turning 10. That they are unrecognizable now compared to their 1st or even 5th birthday shows Kirti and I how fast they have really grown. Fine little pre-teens they've become, with their varied interests in sports and dance leading to a hopefully and potentially fulfilling childhood and beyond. - A splendid trip to Cancun (Mexico) to ring in the kids' milestone birthday. - The hottest Christmas in recent memory (celebrated in Mexico, that is). A trip to the ruins of Chichen-Itza (these folks knew what they were doing, mighty impressive I say), a stroll through the city center of Valladolid (one might say the place bears a striking resemblance to Panjim (Goa)), a thrill-seeking dive through a Cenote, copious amounts of watered-down unlimited alcohol at an all-inclusive resort, which in itself
