Janmashtami & Swine Flu

A (slightly belated but) very happy Independence Day to all you folks!! Enjoyed my first long weekend in India (Janmashtami, August 14th). For the first time in my life, I experienced a full blown version of Lord Krishna's puja at a friend's place at midnight on Friday. The attention to detail was fantastic and the devotion displayed by Panditji and his cronies was thoroughly remarkable. The amazing fact about the night was the heavy downpour at midnight, which coincidentally was the case when Lord Krishna was born.

Saturday and Sunday were equally painful because of the boredom. I still have not been able to get the laptop fixed (which was supposed to have been done by now already).

Leaving for Bombay this weekend to spend Ganesh Chaturthi, first time after marriage in India and enjoy some quality time with family, friends and specially Mayank's baby girl, whom they have named Nayonika (Expressive Eyes).

I will know my fate (supposedly) of my US trip end of this month, that is, if there is going to be a US trip for me or not. Might be off blogging for a while because of the Mumbai trip.

Swine flu has taken 28 lives in India so far and the number only seems to be growing. With no cure in sight, the public has been victimised and threatened because of the media's onslaught. Chaos everywhere!

Don't worry about swine flu too much. It is just media hype. Less than 50 people have died of swine flu till date. This death rate is very less compared to other reasons like 18 people die every hour in India due to road accident.
Swine flu deaths in India have crossed 100. This is particularly alarming since all deaths have occurred in late July and August.

India still is "developing" the vaccine whereas Baxter has already started dispatching the first batches of the H1N1 vaccinations to the western nations.

That said Swine Flu deaths form a minuscule percentage of mortality rates in India. There needs to be more awareness and less panic.

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining...

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore...

A September To Remember

Ah, what a month it was that just went by. Summer turned to Fall and the weather oscillated from hot to cold to hot again. It shouldn't be a surprise to most of you as to why September would be my favorite month of the year (This is your Captain {Obvious} speaking) but this edition of 2023 was a season of many firsts.  Lords Krishna and Ganesh - hello, my good relatives (#IYKYK) - blessed us in the same month for the first time in many years. While the R3K household generally does not do elaborate preparations to welcome our Gods to our humble abode, with the recent shopping spree in India, there were some feel-good moments to cherish. To make matters fun (for the kids), we all got to witness Lord Ganesha bid goodbye to Earthly beings as he was lowered in a tub full of H2O to hopefully resurface with even more pomp next year. Another first. Master Riaan and yours truly got a chance to visit the friendly confines of the famous Wrigley Field - Home of the Chicago Cubs Baseball Team ...
