The Pursuit of Happyness

Saw Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness tonight. One word only to describe the movie: "Masterpiece". If Taare Zameen Par brought tears to your eyes, this one will flat out make you cry. I cannot believe how Will Smith did not get a Best Actor Oscar for this one. He has acted brilliantly in a very very tough role. An immensely talented actor with fantastic attention to detail. He is right up there with George Clooney as my favorite actors. The movie is based in San Francisco in the year 1981 and it portrays the shit that Chris Gardner (Smith's character) has to go through before finally making it big. This movie shows how you've got to grab opportunities when they don't even knock on your door and make full use of it when they actually do. The whole movie it about how good luck always evades you but still you fight through it just to make it to an unpaid internship the next morning.

The scene where Chris lies to his son (played by Will's own son Jaden) about the time machine and how they are transformed to the age of dinosaurs and consequently survive the night in the cave (actually the men's restroom in a SFO train station), sleeping on the dirty floor with tears flowing down Chris's eyes and reluctantly not opening the door of his "cave" when someone wants to use the restroom. Simply amazing.

I am deeply moved by this movie and will watch it again. Not for the hardships, not for the bad luck, not for the missed chances, but for the performance and character of Chris Gardner who survived it all and got through the toughest times. A movie based on a true story of Chris Gardner (A multi-millionaire investment broker). Watch it if you haven't already done so.

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore...

The only reason I write this...

So last time around, I missed writing about a new thing that we did for the first time. We went to a stand-up comedy show at The Improv in Schaumburg. We went to Anthony Jeselnik's show (those who watched the Roast of Charlie Sheen on Comedy Central should know who he is) and it was amazing. Non-stop jokes with a dead pan expression kept the audience in splits throughout the show. He even picked on someone from the crowd and made us realize never to mess with a professional. The woman who got singled out surely learnt her lesson. One thing with these comedians is that no one and no event (however tragic) is off-limits. Case in point, a joke about Casey/Caylee Anthony. So to use the second of our 3 coupons, we watched another show, this time by Greg Behrendt. The profanity-laden show was just average, clearly not the bar set by Jeselnik. And we are still debating on whom to use the final tickets on. So this past week, we had a baby shower for V & S. S, mainly. The surprise party...
