Loss for words

Being in touch with family and friends is always a must-do for all of us NRIs. I am not much of a talker but I do call my family twice a week for about 6-10 minutes of updates from both ends. Same goes with Kirti and her folks and her calls last for about 10-14 minutes.

What I don't understand is some of our friends have their customary/mandatory calls every weekend and some calls last at least an hour and some even more. My first question every time to Kirti is "What is there to talk to parents for more than an hour?" Both of us are literally at loss for words every single time.

Just for the heck of it, I have tried talking to my parents but almost always close to the 7 minute mark, I am done. I have nothing to talk about and surprisingly enough, my parents have no tidbits or in Kirti's terms, no more masala khabar. Even if there is a marriage or an occasion in the family, we just don't go beyond the threshold.

Raise your hand and drop a line if you are like one of us or if you belong to the majority, I would like to hear from you as to what it takes to talk a lot.

Moving on, I am shocked and amazed and extremely proud that India hosted the Commonwealth Games successfully and more importantly, proud that our athletes raked up more than a 100 medals. Numerous articles in almost every national newspaper have applauded the efforts of the athletes but more importantly have ordered the audits to start for gross misuse of funds and authority. Since the PM has made it clear that the guilty will be brought to justice, some heads are sure to roll. Can't wait for the accountability and the finger pointing to begin.

Bigg Boss 4 started with Salman Khan hosting the 3-month event. Shiv Sena and MNS have started their morchas and threats against the channel for inviting Pakistani folks to participate in the show and for once, just this once, I am on their side. Why do we need "them" when we have enough cartoon characters in India. We all live for TRPs and ratings but having a dacoit with murder charges (Seema Parihar) and a bonafide thief in the house just doesn't gel well with me. No wonder these so-called participants are called inmates. I am no moral police, but we as an audience should draw the line in what we want to watch and clearly, the common man has spoken. Give me more Bigg Boss. What the heck, from Arshad Warsi to Shilpa Shetty to Big B to Salman "Dabangg" Khan, the audience waits lustily and breathlessly week-in and week-out.

Dusshera has come and gone and we wait eagerly for Diwali. Hopefully will be a good one for all of us.

Happy Dusshera!!

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore...

Writer's Block

It's been six months since I put pen to paper, rather, fingers to keyboard, to put up a blog post. Talk about a writer's block. Highlights of the hiatus include; - Rivika and Riaan turning 10. That they are unrecognizable now compared to their 1st or even 5th birthday shows Kirti and I how fast they have really grown. Fine little pre-teens they've become, with their varied interests in sports and dance leading to a hopefully and potentially fulfilling childhood and beyond. - A splendid trip to Cancun (Mexico) to ring in the kids' milestone birthday. - The hottest Christmas in recent memory (celebrated in Mexico, that is). A trip to the ruins of Chichen-Itza (these folks knew what they were doing, mighty impressive I say), a stroll through the city center of Valladolid (one might say the place bears a striking resemblance to Panjim (Goa)), a thrill-seeking dive through a Cenote, copious amounts of watered-down unlimited alcohol at an all-inclusive resort, which in itself...

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining...
