Viva Las Vegas

Back after a refreshing trip to Sin City for the Labor Day Weekend, we immediately got back to the preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi.

Traveling to the desert and back to Chi-town literally had us in a tizzy for the rest of the week. I haven't felt jet-lagged in my 5-6 trips to and from India but this 3 hour Red-eye from McCarran to O'hare was just tiring. Reaching Chicago at 5:30 in the morning and then picking up the Boss from the hotel at 8:30 and then staying at work till 5:30 was exhausting, so exhausting that we both dozed off at 8:30 every night for the rest of the week.

Back in Vegas, a lot had changed (obviously) since 2002. We stayed at one of the older hotels (Riviera) and it showed. Nicer hotels like the Aria, Cosmopolitan, Wynn & Encore had altered the Vegas landscape. Still the kings of the Vegas Strip are The Bellagio, Caesar's Palace and The Venetian and throw in a mixture of the Mandalay Bay, New York New York, Luxor and MGM Grand.

Lots of free shows and a ton of walking up and down 100 degree weather made it a worthwhile trip. Kirti and I checked out the O show from Cirque Du Soleil and it was just terrific.

Rode the superb roller coaster at New York New York and the heart-stopping triple monster (X-Scream, Insanity and Big Shot) at The Stratosphere. Brilliant. Any reservations I might have had with heights, just evaporated.

By far the best free show we experienced was....of course, the Bellagio fountains. Beautiful orchestration and perfect timing. A visit to downtown Las Vegas (Fremont Street Experience) was pretty good with some photos with the Showgirls and a little bit of gambling had us nicely set up for the O show.

Las Vegas means gambling. So we did gamble and came up short by about $150. Overall, a very superb experience and for once Kirti can say I took her to Las Vegas.

Back in Chicago, Ganpati came and went and this this time unlike 2007, it was a pretty low-key affair.

Between Las Vegas and Ganpati, NFL season started and for the past 2 weeks, I have had my share of games that I had missed last season. Business trip, you see.

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore...

Writer's Block

It's been six months since I put pen to paper, rather, fingers to keyboard, to put up a blog post. Talk about a writer's block. Highlights of the hiatus include; - Rivika and Riaan turning 10. That they are unrecognizable now compared to their 1st or even 5th birthday shows Kirti and I how fast they have really grown. Fine little pre-teens they've become, with their varied interests in sports and dance leading to a hopefully and potentially fulfilling childhood and beyond. - A splendid trip to Cancun (Mexico) to ring in the kids' milestone birthday. - The hottest Christmas in recent memory (celebrated in Mexico, that is). A trip to the ruins of Chichen-Itza (these folks knew what they were doing, mighty impressive I say), a stroll through the city center of Valladolid (one might say the place bears a striking resemblance to Panjim (Goa)), a thrill-seeking dive through a Cenote, copious amounts of watered-down unlimited alcohol at an all-inclusive resort, which in itself...

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining...
