Earthquake in China and Bombs in Jaipur

Thousands dead, missing and unaccounted for from the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that rocked China this past week. Thousands still without any kind of aid from Cyclone Nargis that hit Burma couple of weeks ago. Military government does not make it any easier for international help to enter the country. Close to 100 dead from a series of bombs that hit one of India's prettiest cities - Jaipur. Indian Mujahideen, a relatively new terrorist outfit proudly claims that they are the ones responsible for the bombs. Bomb squads were quick to diffuse one of the bombs that could have killed a few more.

My heart goes out to the people killed and the near and dear ones lost in the mindless attacks. Terrorism targets religion and the innocent. The brainless and heartless leaders of these outfits must be taught a lesson. Unfortunately, it is not an easy task as the terrorists look just like you and me and the government can't question all of us alike. This is where informants and the police (generalised) must be on their toes to thwart any impending attacks on our motherland. The public must be aware of their surroundings and must notify the authorities on anything that they find suspicious, however trivial their suspicions might be. It might just save hundreds of lives.

It is each and everyones duty to give back something to the nation as we try and clean up Jaipur and other cities destroyed by the bombs. Even after the terrible attacks, Lalit Modi, the commissioner of the IPL, announced that Rajasthan Royals' match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium will go ahead as planned. How are the people of the pink city supposed to enjoy the game of cricket when the blood is not even cleaned from the streets. That is heartless. Make a buck at every possible opportunity seems like the mantra for the IPL bosses and the BCCI. More and more reason for me to hate the IPL concept (which is the brainchild of Lalit Modi, going against Subhash Chandra's ICL).

In good hockey news, India won the silver at the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia, falling to Argentina 1-2 in extra time. Great job and good luck to the young players wearing the India cap. They have made us proud.

Wipro had its summer picnic yesterday at Snail Lake Park and 40 adults and children had a great time.

Sunday Night Update

Watched the first presidential debate on friday night between John McCain and Barack Obama. Good timepass on a friday night, if you are into these things. I have been taking a keen interest in politics lately and it keeps the clock ticking for me after I reach home from work.  I am particularly annoyed and irritated at both these candidates on the Iraq war for always ignoring the fact that over 100,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. What wrong did they do? And there aren't too many news outlets that are willing to show the plight of (Iraqi) families who lost near and dear ones. That's obvious, isn't it? Barack Obama looks confident and ready moreso that John McCain to lead the United States for the next 4 years. Looking forward to the Joe Biden - Sarah Palin debate this coming thursday. Should be interesting to see Palin talk extempore without a teleprompter.  Back to some sunday night news here. For the first time in few years since I started following football, I felt bore...

Writer's Block

It's been six months since I put pen to paper, rather, fingers to keyboard, to put up a blog post. Talk about a writer's block. Highlights of the hiatus include; - Rivika and Riaan turning 10. That they are unrecognizable now compared to their 1st or even 5th birthday shows Kirti and I how fast they have really grown. Fine little pre-teens they've become, with their varied interests in sports and dance leading to a hopefully and potentially fulfilling childhood and beyond. - A splendid trip to Cancun (Mexico) to ring in the kids' milestone birthday. - The hottest Christmas in recent memory (celebrated in Mexico, that is). A trip to the ruins of Chichen-Itza (these folks knew what they were doing, mighty impressive I say), a stroll through the city center of Valladolid (one might say the place bears a striking resemblance to Panjim (Goa)), a thrill-seeking dive through a Cenote, copious amounts of watered-down unlimited alcohol at an all-inclusive resort, which in itself...

Please Help

While I have been blogging for nearly 2 years now and that visitors (like you) are fairly low in number, I would still like to know who you are. Although I know one of my UA friend is a regular here (and yes, it is you Hari), I don't know who are the other frequent fliers. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is also fine, but kindly leave a comment or two in the message box that is on the right side of the webpage. I am trying to get a feel for how often do you stop by. The reason I am asking you to do this is because I need your help. No, it has nothing to do with donations or anything monetary, but here I am in my third month in Bangalore and I am absolutely bored. I need some suggestions to utilize my time efficiently and effectively. Please refrain from suggesting using the gym or joining a book club. These 2 are not my cuppa tea. My mind is 100% blank about extra-curricular activities and I need some 'external' help. One of my closest friends had suggested joining...
